The incident took place on Monday, Jan 21, when an employee at the Regal Care of Southport reported that a male patient was observed exiting the room of an elderly non-communicative patient’s room, said Fairfield Police Capt. Robert Kalamaras.

Upon further inspection of the patient, the employee found her adult diaper was open, the employee immediately notified the police, he said,

A police investigation ensued that involved the examination of scientific evidence, interviews of staff members, interviews of family members, and interviews of the suspect, Kalamaras said.

During the investigation, family members reported multiple previous incidents involving Elias Saldana accessing the victim’s room specifically against the family’s wishes.

Regal Care of Southport assured them that a safety plan was in place to prevent Saldana’s access to the victim. As a result of this investigation, it was determined that Elias Saldana 57,  illegally accessed the victim's room and sexually assaulted her, Kalamaras said.

Saldana was arrested for two counts of sexual assault, reckless endangerment and burglary.

He is being held on $100,000 court set bond and scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
